Who is stalking Seffi Callard, the world’s most fashionable celebrity medium, now a paranoid recluse at her father’s home in the Costwolds? Her old mentor, Marcus Bacton, editor of an ailing journal of the paranormal, sends his assistant, Grayle Underhill to find out - unaware that he’s thrusting them both into a nightmare... and the attentions of a vicious career-criminal for whom getting rich is less important than never getting dead.

Mean Spirit eBook Phil Rickman
I enjoyed this book by Will Kingdom. Mean Spirit has all of the elements of a good spooky tale. Persephone Callard is a famous medium in hiding. There is a serious mystery as to why the medium is running away and Grayle Underhill, a journalist, finds her. Bobby Maiden is a cop who's had a near death experience and he's thrown into the mix of murder and mystery as is Marcus Bacton, Grayle's boss, who runs a small paranormal magazine - his house and office is behind castle walls where he owns a small farm. There are many surprising elements in this story and some serious bad guys all involving the medium, and various hauntings.
This is a good winter's read that goes well with snuggling with a cozy blanket and a cup of tea. It does have it's grisly parts and sections of humor that involve Cindy Mars-Lewis, the lotto announcer who seems to have the hand of fate where lotto winners are concerned. I found her to be a great character and enjoyed reading of her antics in the book.
This book is also 571 pages so it's a nice thick book but you'll not notice when you read it-time goes pretty fast once you start.
I would recommend this to those who like a good, twisted story without a lot of gore and violence and enjoy the atmosphere of things that go bump in the night. Will Kingdom makes Wales a very interesting place.

Mean Spirit eBook Phil Rickman Reviews
Another great story by an awesome writer. Phil Rickman is truly one of the very best authors ever. Thank you
Phil Rickman is the best. I loved The Cold Calling, and Mean Spirit wrapped things up nicely. I have been a Phil Rickman fan since 1998, when I found a copy of December in the seat pocket on a flight from Chicago to Copenhagen. Excellent sequel, but not a standalone novel.
I don't know why I didn't like The Cold Calling as much. For some reason I kept skipping to the Bobby Maiden parts of the story. I think Rickman was finding his way in the first book, and finally hit upon his forumla by the time he got around to Mean Spirit. No skipping pages for me in this one, which I bought in edition. Still managed to finish it in a couple of nights. Loved the characters this time around Grayle Underhill, the freelance journalist; Marcus Bacton, the cranky proprietor of a New Age magazine; Bobby Maiden, the cop/artist with unbelievably bad luck and Cindy, the transvestite shaman/entertainer. The Cold Calling is necessary reading if you want the backstory, but Mean Spirit is the tale worth spending time on.
The further adventures of Grayle, Bobby, and Marcus from The Cold Calling, Mean Spirit is another chilling read with twists of dark humor and nail-biting action. One of the scariest edge-of-your-seat endings in existence! These characters are so winning, you wish there were more in this short series from Phil Rickman, whose Merrily Watkins series is very popular. Cast some spells on publishers to encourage more in the Cold Calling series. More Cindy... more Arnold, please!
These characters are distinct and well-drawn, especially the enigmatic Cindy Mars-Lewis, a cross-dressing Welsh Shaman. It was also a great story, well-paced and intriguing. My only mild complaint was that there were a few too many characters. This novel had a real spark and energy that the most recent Merrily Watkins installment really lacked. I hope Rickman puts Merrily aside for awhile and focuses on this series, which seems so much more alive.
I am a long time fan of the Merrily Watkins series and was thrilled to find The Cold Calling and Mean Spirit in the eBook store. There are few authors who can evoke a character as brilliantly as Mr. Rickman does and these two books are no exception. Mean Spirit brings Bobby Maiden, Andy the Scots nurse, American reporter Grayle Underhill, the irascible Marcus Bacton and cross-dressing Shaman and lottery announcer Cindy Mars-Lewis back together. Add to this rich tapestry psychic Persephone Callard and a quick, rich plot about die hard criminals and the paranormal and mystic universe the author creates so effectively and you've got a read that's hard to put down.
I hope that this fine author will write about these characters again. I'm dying to know what happens next!
It was a delight to meet again the wonderfully eccentric characters from The Cold Calling. It's great that these two books are now readily available again under the author's real name, Phil Rickman. He is a master of the crime genre, with paranormal overtones that leave your spine tingling. His books feature intricate plots, so that the reader knows they can re-read them many times and still find another interesting detail or connection. But it's the characters that captivate you - they come so alive and you get so involved with them that you can't help but want to meet them again and know more about what happens to them. I encourage everyone who reads these books to review them wherever possible so the publishers might be encouraged to demand more in the series!
